What's On in Maryborough, Queensland.

Wharf Street

Maryborough has a rich history and is known for its heritage architecture.

◆ The town of Maryborough boasts well preserved colonial architecture and stunning sights, such as the St. Paul's Anglican Church, Customs House, and Maryborough Railway Station. These, and more, are prime examples of this colonial beauty.

◆ The Mary Poppins Festival commemorates Maryborough’s own beloved literary figure P.L. Travers and attracts both tourists and locals alike with fun-loving music, art, theatre, and children's activities. A bronze statue of the much-loved nanny was erected through community involvement and is located on the corner of Kent and Richmond Streets.

◆ Every Thursday morning right in the heart of the city centre, is the Maryborough Rotary Market, featuring entertainment and a great variety of stalls to tempt the visitor. It's the day colourful stalls and music take over from traffic and the city centre is transformed into the bustling outdoor markets, a weekly celebration that began in 1987.

Visitors to the Thursday morning market can make a day of it and join a free guided Heritage Walk Tour from outside the City Hall at 9am. A map of the market is available from the Visitor Information Centre.

Whilst at the market, stay for the firing of the city's historic Time Cannon at 1pm by the city's ambassadors, the Town Crier and Mary Heritage. The gun is a replica of the cannon that was fired daily at 1pm in the days before there was a town clock.

◆ The Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum is acknowledged as one of the top community museums in Australia. This museum is a 'must see' during your time in Maryborough. The historical and significant are amongst 10,000 items of military and colonial memorabilia, which form displays of exceptional quality at the museum.

◆ The Bond Store represents the development of Maryborough as an important river port during the pre-Federation era. The earthen floor and ancient handmade bricks in the original 1864 building downstairs still exist, as do many of the liquor barrels left over from that time.

◆ The Whistlestop Museum is located on the site of the heritage-listed Maryborough railway station and contains a small, but remarkable, collection of railway memorabilia. The museum is open Monday to Thursday, 9am until 12pm.

◆ There are a number of parks and gardens here including the beautiful Queens Park to further enhance visitors with the appeal of this quaint Australian town.

◆ At Maryborough Portside, beside the Mary River, seven colourful bollards overlook the Mary River. They represent a sea captain welcoming a family of immigrants.
